Our Journey: From Phuket via Phang-nga to Krabi at the Anana Ecological Resort
Our journey begins on Phuket, the famous holiday island in southern Thailand. From here, we head north, passing the airport and crossing the Sarasin Bridge, which connects Phuket to the mainland, entering the province of Phang-nga. The drive itself offers us an impression of the region’s stunning landscape.
Phang-nga – A Stop Amidst Nature
Phang-nga, located just north of Phuket, is renowned for its extraordinary geological formations and is a paradise for nature and adventure lovers. Spectacular islands, caves, and bizarre rock formations are lined up here, with the most famous ones found in the Phang-nga Bay, Similan Islands, and Surin Islands marine national parks. Those with more time can explore the beautiful waterfalls, temples, and archaeological sites such as Ban Thung Tuek in the inland area. However, Phang-nga is not just for explorers – idyllic bays and luxurious resorts invite visitors to relax and unwind.
After a brief stop in Phang-nga, we continue our journey past green hills and limestone cliffs that prepare us for the next stage.
Krabi – The Gateway to the Andaman Sea
The Krabi region is our destination – a true gem on Thailand’s southwest coast, known for its stunning beaches and lush jungles. Here, where rugged rock formations meet turquoise waters to create an unparalleled backdrop, lies our destination: the Anana Ecological Resort.
Ao Nang Beach – The Highlight of the Coast
Before we reach the hotel, it’s worth making a detour to Ao Nang Beach, one of the most famous beaches in the region. The 1.3-kilometer-long sandy beach, framed by fascinating limestone cliffs, offers a breathtaking setting for sunbathing and relaxation. At the same time, it serves as an ideal starting point for day trips: numerous boats depart from here to the offshore islands, perfect for island hopping or a visit to Phang-nga Bay.
The Anana Ecological Resort in Ao Nang
Our hotel is located about 2.5 kilometers from Ao Nang Beach, nestled idyllically against a majestic mountain. This tranquil location combines proximity to popular beaches with the seclusion and harmony of nature. The Anana Ecological Resort is more than just a hotel – it’s a concept that merges sustainability and luxury.
Here, we meet Wolfgang Grimm, the visionary hotelier who created this oasis.
Welcome at the Anana Ecological Resort
As soon as we arrived, the friendly staff warmly welcomed us and escorted us to our Spa Suite. This spacious accommodation of approximately 55 square meters offered pure luxury: a private bathtub, a king-size bed, and a stunning view of the hotel’s lush garden.
The Anana Ecological Resort offers various room types, each distinguished by its nature-inspired design and exclusive amenities. In addition to our Spa Suite, there is the Thai Studio, the Family and Friends Studio with children’s beds, the Pool Access Suite, and the Upper Pool Access Suite, which features a spiral staircase leading directly to the pool. All rooms are designed to provide guests with both comfort and a harmonious connection with nature.

A Unique Concept for Sustainable Tourism
„Tourism is both a blessing and a curse,“ says Wolfgang Grimm in an interview, addressing an important issue. For him, sustainability means leaving 50 percent of the land untouched to maintain the natural balance. This 50-50 concept is reflected in the entire design of the resort. Mr. Grimm places great emphasis on ensuring that the undeveloped areas of the resort are used purposefully – for instance, as the resort’s own farm.
The resort’s farm is based on the principles of permaculture and is run without synthetic additives. Vegetables and fruits grown here are later served in the hotel’s restaurants. „Permaculture is like a work of art,“ Mr. Grimm describes, and indeed, a walk through the farm feels like visiting a botanical garden. Guests can explore the diversity of plants and learn more about sustainable farming – an inspiring experience.
„We must use the ecological outcry of our children and the current crisis to mobilize the local community with small, easily achievable sustainable activities for mutual benefit,“* Mr. Grimm continues. For him, the Anana Ecological Resort is not just a hotel but a model that demonstrates how tourism and environmental protection can go hand in hand. „It’s about integrating the hotel into the community, so that the destination and the essence of Krabi can be felt in every detail of the resort.“

Architecture with Tradition: Adobe Construction and Solar Energy
A distinctive feature of the resort is its use of adobe construction, which was employed for the buildings on the farm. Bricks made from earth, straw, and clay were used for the beauty center, a spacious yoga hall, and the farm’s utility rooms. These sun-dried bricks, free from chemical additives, give the area a rustic, natural aesthetic. This eco-friendly construction method creates a close connection to nature in the spaces most associated with the resort’s sustainability efforts.
When it comes to energy, Anana also takes an innovative approach. The resort’s own solar power system covers, on average, around 30 percent of its total energy needs, with up to 60 percent of the demand met during the daytime. These sustainable solutions allow the resort to reduce energy costs while minimizing its environmental impact. Mr. Grimm emphasizes, „Energy efficiency and collaboration with local companies are essential to keeping our green footprint as small as possible.“
The Resort
The resort is divided into two areas, each offering guests a unique and luxurious experience.
The first area includes the main building with spacious rooms and suites, all of which provide impressive views toward Ao Nang Beach, located about 2.5 kilometers away. Here, guests can enjoy a harmonious combination of comfort, style, and modern design.
The second area is dedicated to the Pool Suites and Pool Access Suites. The Pool Suites are located on the ground floor and feature a private terrace with direct access to the pool – perfect for a refreshing dip at any time. The Pool Access Suites are situated on the first floor and offer an additional highlight: the balcony is connected to the pool level via an elegant spiral staircase, creating a luxurious and unique atmosphere.
Both areas reflect the resort’s philosophy – a perfect blend of luxury, comfort, and closeness to nature.

Cuisine: Fresh Ingredients from the Resort’s Own Farm
Culinary highlights abound at the Anana Ecological Resort. The resort offers several dining options, including the rooftop Ananasky Lounge and the Streats restaurant, where breakfast is served. Most ingredients come directly from the resort’s own farm, ensuring freshness and top-quality flavors. On our first evening, we were invited by Mr. Grimm to join him at an authentic Thai restaurant in the heart of Krabi, where we enjoyed the variety of Thai cuisine in a traditional setting.
„Our cuisine is based on seasonal and local products,“ Mr. Grimm explains. Thanks to Thailand’s favorable climate, it’s harvest season almost all year round, which makes the flavors of the dishes exceptionally fresh. The farm’s cultivation concept ensures that different plants grow harmoniously side by side, supporting each other’s development.
A Hotel for Nature Lovers
What truly sets this resort apart is its commitment to the planet and its people. Guests who care about their ecological footprint will feel right at home here — and there are plenty of them worldwide! At the Anana Ecological Resort, you’ll meet visitors from all corners of the globe who appreciate this unique blend of luxury and sustainability.
Sustainability and Social Responsibility
In addition to its ecological focus, the Anana Ecological Resort places great importance on social responsibility. Mr. Grimm explains that the resort’s employees share in its success and receive a monthly profit share. As a result, the staff members are among the highest-paid in Krabi. This financial recognition is reflected in the warmth and professionalism with which guests are welcomed and cared for. “Our employees should feel valued and proud of their work,” emphasizes Mr. Grimm.
I highly recommend checking out the incredible reviews on Tripadvisor. After all, it’s one thing for me to write about the friendliness of the staff, but it’s quite another to read it for yourself in over 800 consistently positive reviews on Tripadvisor.
Yoga and Spa – Pure Relaxation at the Anana Ecological Resort
For yoga enthusiasts, the Anana Ecological Resort offers a truly special experience. I attended a yoga session at the Yoga Shala, which is beautifully integrated into the resort’s permaculture farm. The atmosphere was simply unique: surrounded by lush greenery, with a gentle breeze and peaceful quiet, I was able to completely disconnect. The 80-square-meter Shala provides ample space and a serene environment – perfect for finding balance between body and mind. For me, it was one of the most beautiful yoga experiences I’ve ever had.
The Asana Spa perfectly complements the resort’s offerings, combining traditional techniques with natural elements. Guests can relax in the Himalayan salt chamber, enjoy soothing treatments in the spa rooms, or rejuvenate in the sauna and steam bath with panoramic views. All treatments use organic Thai oils and herbs – a real highlight for anyone who values natural care.
Whether it’s yoga or spa treatments, the Anana Ecological Resort offers the perfect retreat for both body and soul!
Experiences and Excursions: Discovering Nature and Culture
One of our highlights was the visit to the Emerald Pool. The drive takes about 1.5 hours, but it’s well worth it. The emerald-green pool is not only a stunning sight but also a popular natural attraction in Krabi. After a walk of around 3 kilometers, we reached the Blue Pool, with its deep blue water creating a mesmerizing view.
Even though we got caught in a rain shower, it didn’t dampen our spirits. Quite the opposite – that’s just how it is in Thailand: after the rain, the sun always shines again.
Conclusion on the Resort
A harmonious blend of luxury and sustainability.
The Anana Ecological Resort is more than just a hotel – it’s a vision, a place of connection and mindful relaxation. Here, luxury meets sustainability, community merges with a deep bond to nature.
